What? Fun is banned
in Thailand? This writer is living in Bangkok, capitol of the "land of Smiles". You will know it as Thailand. An article in the Thai daily, "The Nation" on May 14 said that "in a further 26 Thai provinces night entertainment places would be banned". The article went on to list the unfortunate provinces and stated what forms of entertainment would be banned. Imagine my dismay when I saw that slated for immediate attention and-one assumed-destruction or closure, were such dens of evil as , coffee shops, karaokes, night clubs and bars. Jeez I thought, the Thais are the most fun loving people on earth, will they stand for this? Does this mean that every coffee shop in these provinces will be closed? What about the ones in hotels? What about Starbucks? And Karaoke bars? Are they evil? How on earth could this happen outside the Taliban era of Afganastan? The powers that be were outlawing fun for chrissakes. No need to worry, you can still plan your fun filled trip to Thailand. What the normally accurate Nation failed to mention is that what was being banned was the opening of NEW sin stations in these about to be cleansed provinces. Cmo'n Nation editors, get it right please. You want to entirely KILL the tourism industry? Bill Foagrty 9:02 PM email comments for possible publication at blog@activelifestyle.com |
